I’ve Been Tagged Twice: I Guess I’m Really It

This is my first participation in a so-called “meme” (I don’t even know what the term means. It’s what my kids call my wife’s mom.). But since I’ve been tagged twice (see here and here).

(By the way, the rules are that you cannot use the Bible as an answer for any of the questions and you must list only one book per question.)
1. One book that changed your life:

An Earnest Ministry by John Angell James (This 19th century pastor taught me the importance of being fervent in my preaching, discipling and evangelizing.)

2. One book that you’ve read more than once:
Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God by J.I. Packer (This book not only explains how belief in the sovereignty of God and our responsibility to evangelize are not mutually exclusive, it also contains one of the best explanations of the gospel in print.)

3. One book you’d want on a desert island:
Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Bible (I’d finally have the time to give this work the attention that it deserves.)

4. One book that made you laugh:
A Field Guide to Evangelical & Their Habitat By Joel Kilpatrick (By the same people who bring you LarkNews.com. A satire of contemporary evangelicalism.)

5. One book that made you cry:
The Texas Baptist Crucible: Tales from the Temple by James Spurgeon (because of the pain caused by an all too familiar legalism)

6. One book that you wish had been written:
The New Covenant by D. A. Carson and Douglas Moo

7. One book that you wish had never been written:
Dispensational Truth by Clarence Larkin (He could have at least left the charts out.)

8. One book you’re currently reading:
Rediscovering our English Baptist Heritage: Kiffin, Knollys and Keach by Michael A. G. Haykin (Background reading in British Particular Baptist history. Good stuff!!!)

9. One book you’ve been meaning to read:
Above All Earthly Pow’rs: Christ in a Postmodern World by David Wells (It’s on my shelf. Looks good. Recommended by John Piper, Mark Dever and Timmy Brister)

10. Now tag four people:
John Rush, Scott Lamb, Brian Trapp, Ray Rhodes

11. Others who have already been tagged (I added this component since so many others have already done this meme):

D. J. Cimino, Jeremy Weaver, Garry Weaver, Michael Haykin, Ian Clary, Steve McCoy, Terry Stauffer, and Neil Shay.

  1. Hi there.
I came across this blog surfing the net and thought I would read what a Pastor has to say.
I’m an avid reader and its always interesting to see what other people consider to be good/bad/inspiring/irritating/informative etc. books.
But dear, dear me, Steve….do you only read books about theology???
Of course it’s your job and your life….but BUT!!! There’s so much more out there!
